What Is Phone Location History?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Phone location history is a record of the places a device has visited, logged automatically by GPS, cell towers, and Wi-Fi signals. On Android, this data is tied to a Google Account through Google Maps Timeline. On iPhone, Apple stores location data locally through a feature called Significant Locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One important change: since late 2023, Google moved Timeline storage from the cloud to the device itself. This means your location history no longer syncs across devices via your Google Account \u2014 it lives on the specific phone where it was recorded. If you’re looking for location history from a device you no longer have, that data may no longer be accessible through Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Check Location History on Android<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Android location history is managed through Google Maps. These steps apply to most Android devices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Significant Locations tracks iphone location history by date and groups visits by location type. It is not accessible remotely \u2014 you need physical access to the device to view it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If you want to see location history on Find My: Find My only shows the current location of a device, not a historical route. It does not function as a location history log.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      How to Enable or Disable Location History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      To turn on Google location history on Android or iPhone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Go to myaccount.google.com on a browser.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Click “Data & Privacy.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Under “History settings,” click “Location History.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n

        To delete past data, open Google Maps Timeline and tap the trash icon on any day. To erase all data, go to Google Account > Data & Privacy > Delete activity by > All time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
