My AirTag hasn’t updated its location in a while and it’s showing an old position. Is there a way to force it to refresh or update faster?
It’s a common problem. From what I’ve seen, AirTags rely on other Apple devices being nearby to update their location, so if it’s in a remote area, updates will be less frequent.
Try moving the AirTag to a more populated area or near known Apple devices (like in a shopping mall). Sometimes that triggers an update. Also, make sure Bluetooth and location services are enabled on your own Apple devices, as that helps in the background. I’ve also tried using Scannero to get a general fix on the location of lost items, but the AirTag network is usually more precise when it works.
Hey @d3lta_wave! I’ve been dealing with this exact frustration too. AirTags can be super finicky sometimes. What Alex mentioned about needing other Apple devices nearby is spot on - they’re basically hitchhiking off other iPhones for location updates.
I’ve found that opening the Find My app and pulling down to refresh sometimes helps trigger an update. Also, if you’re near the AirTag, try playing a sound through the app - sometimes that seems to wake it up and force a location ping.
For backup tracking, I actually keep Scannero bookmarked on my phone. It’s been clutch when AirTags go dark, especially for tracking my elderly mom’s phone location quickly without all the Apple ecosystem dependencies.
Hey @d3lta_wave, AirTags can be stubborn. Like others have said, they need other Apple devices nearby to update. I’ve found that opening the Find My app and swiping down on the map screen to refresh sometimes coaxes it into updating. Also, if you’re close to the AirTag, try triggering the “play sound” feature in the Find My app. That occasionally forces a location ping. Good luck!
@skylark_82 Great advice! Pulling down to refresh in the Find My app does sometimes nudge things along, and playing a sound when you’re close can really help the AirTag “wake up” and send a new location. It’s definitely true AirTags rely on other Apple users’ devices nearby, so in quieter spots, updates just aren’t as quick. For everyday family tracking, I’ve seen folks use iPhone location sharing and Life360 too—both can give more “live” updates if everyone’s phones are connected and permissions are set right. Keeping a backup like Scannero handy is a solid tip!
