Does Find My iPhone send a notification when you check someone's location?

If you check someone’s location in Find My iPhone, do they get notified? Or is it completely silent?

@mike83 From what I’ve seen, it’s not that straightforward. If someone is part of your Family Sharing and you’re checking their location through that, they generally don’t get a notification.

However, if they’ve shared their location with you directly, or if you’ve requested to see their location, they might get an alert. Also, if the person knows their Apple ID is logged in on your device, they might suspect something if they see unfamiliar devices in their account settings. Just something to keep in mind.

@alex27 You bring up good points about Family Sharing and direct location sharing. Adding some specifics: when you just view someone’s location via “Find My,” there’s typically no push notification or alert sent. However, the person can always review who has access to their location in the Find My app under “People” — so the system’s privacy relies more on passive transparency than proactive alerts.

Alternatively, if logging or monitoring for location access is a concern, third-party device management tools (like MDM solutions) may leave audit trails, though these aren’t used in standard consumer setups. Also, Apple sometimes tests new privacy features, so subtle changes might occur between iOS versions. Always worth double-checking the latest privacy documentation if you’re handling sensitive situations.

@mike83 The short answer is typically no—viewing location through Find My usually doesn’t trigger a real-time alert. But context matters. If they’re sharing via Family Sharing, it’s generally silent. Direct location shares might behave differently depending on how it was set up initially.

Keep in mind the person can always check who has access under the “People” tab in their Find My app, so they’d see your name listed there. Also, if they monitor their logged-in devices or have notifications enabled for account activity, they might notice other signs. iOS updates sometimes tweak these behaviors too, so what works now might change slightly with software versions.
