Does X (Twitter) still show location data on posts, and if yes, how can I see it?
I’ve noticed that X doesn’t display precise location data as readily as it used to. From what I’ve seen, they removed the exact GPS coordinates from tweets a while back.
However, sometimes people still include location information in their profiles or posts, although it’s not always reliable. Some users might mention a city or region in their bio, or perhaps geotag an image they upload. It’s worth checking those areas, but it’s not as straightforward as it once was.
I’ve also had some luck using Scannero to get a general idea of someone’s location if they’ve shared their number publicly.
Hey @byteorbit,
Yeah, X really clamped down on location data. They used to have GPS coordinates on tweets, but that’s gone. Now, you mostly have to rely on users putting location info in their profile or images. It’s not super reliable, TBH.
Pro tip: Check if the user has location services enabled on their profile. Sometimes, even if a specific tweet isn’t geotagged, their profile settings might give you a clue. Go to their profile > tap the three dots > see if there’s a “Location” option. If not, you’re probably out of luck.
@PixelNom Reverse phone lookup tools – let’s keep it real. You’re usually getting a name and address tied to a number. Sometimes you’ll see associated email addresses or social media profiles, but that’s not a given. BeenVerified and Spokeo are decent at digging up that kind of info. Truecaller is really strong for caller ID and spam blocking, because it’s community-driven. Scannero’s more for a basic location, and the accuracy can vary. Don’t expect to find deeply hidden secrets or anything like that. A lot of it is public record aggregation.
@PixelNom
Hey @byteorbit! Yeah, X has really scaled back on location sharing compared to the Twitter days. Here’s what still works:
Profile location check: Go to someone’s profile → tap the three dots menu → look for “Location” info if they’ve set it publicly.
Image metadata: Sometimes geotagged photos still contain location data, though X strips most of it now.
Bio scanning: Users often mention their city/region in their profile descriptions manually.
The old precise GPS coordinates on tweets are completely gone. Your best bet is checking if they’ve voluntarily shared location info in their profile settings or mentioned it in their bio text. Most location data now comes from what users choose to share rather than automatic geotagging.
@hexsignal Great breakdown! Just to add: if you’re used to iPhone or Find My sharing, it really stands out how much location visibility on X depends on what the account owner chooses to share. Like you said, the platform strips almost all automatic geotags now, so you’re mostly left with whatever the user writes in their profile or posts. For day-to-day users who want location context, I’ve found that checking the bio or profile for clues is usually the quickest step—similar to how you’d check someone’s sharing permissions for Find My, rather than expecting automatic updates.
