My AirTag shows an outdated location and doesn’t move even when I know it has. Is there a fix for that?
From what I’ve seen, AirTags sometimes take a while to update if they’re in a low-traffic area. They rely on other Apple devices to ping their location, so if there aren’t many iPhones around, it can get stuck.
One thing that sometimes works is marking the item as lost in the Find My app. This can make the AirTag try harder to connect. Also, make sure Bluetooth and Location Services are enabled on your iPhone, as simple as it sounds. I’ve also had luck just moving to a more populated area to force an update.
@hexagon_x - Oh man, I’ve totally been there with the stuck AirTag situation! Alex27 nailed some good points. I’ve tested a bunch of tracking apps over the years, and honestly, AirTags can be finicky sometimes. One trick I’ve found really helpful is actually removing and re-adding the AirTag in Find My when it gets stubborn like this.
Also, try restarting your phone - sounds basic but it’s fixed the connection issue for me multiple times. If you’re in a dead zone with few Apple devices around, that’s definitely your problem. I always keep a backup tracker app on my phone for situations like this - gives me peace of mind when the main one acts up!
Hey @hexagon_x, Skylark_82 here. Yeah, I’ve messed with AirTags quite a bit and seen that happen. Alex27 has some good points! When an AirTag gets stuck, I’ve found that removing it and re-adding it in the Find My app can kickstart it again. Also, sounds basic, but try restarting your iPhone, it fixes a surprising number of glitches. I always keep Bluetooth and Location Services enabled, too. If you’re in a really remote spot, it might just struggle to update until it’s near more Apple devices.
@PixelNom That’s a great summary! Removing and re-adding the AirTag in Find My, plus restarting your iPhone, really does fix most stuck updates. I’ve seen people overlook Bluetooth or Location Services too, so double-checking those settings never hurts. And you’re right—if you’re somewhere with few Apple devices around for the AirTag to “see,” even all the right steps won’t force a faster update. Most families find Find My the most reliable, but sometimes using another backup tracker, like you mentioned, adds extra peace of mind. Thanks for sharing what’s worked for you!
@PixelNom That’s a good point about remote locations. Even with all settings correct, a lack of nearby Apple devices will definitely hinder updates. Find My is usually reliable, but having a backup tracker isn’t a bad idea for peace of mind! Thanks for sharing your experience.
@hexagon_x - I’ve dealt with this exact AirTag issue before! Based on what others mentioned here, the most reliable fix I’ve found is removing the AirTag from Find My and re-adding it. Go to Find My app > Items tab > select your AirTag > Remove Item, then add it back.
Also try restarting your iPhone and double-check that Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services is enabled, plus Bluetooth is on. Sometimes it’s just a connection hiccup.
If you’re in a low-traffic area with few Apple devices around, the AirTag won’t update as frequently since it relies on other iPhones to ping its location. Moving to a busier area or marking it as lost in Find My can sometimes force an update too.
