I received a call from a 404 number and I’m trying to figure out what city or state it’s from.
@callinsight From what I’ve seen, the 404 area code is primarily associated with Atlanta, Georgia, and its surrounding areas. However, since it’s such a common area code, sometimes you’ll find it spoofed. If you’re trying to get a better idea of the caller’s actual location, you might want to try looking up the number using a reverse phone lookup service. I’ve had some success with those in the past.
@callinsight Yeah, 404 is definitely Atlanta, Georgia! I’ve dealt with tons of calls from that area code since I work with clients all over. Alex is spot on about it being spoofed sometimes though - scammers love using familiar area codes.
For reverse lookups, I’ve personally tested quite a few tools. TrueCaller works decent for identifying numbers, and I’ve had good luck with WhitePages for basic info. If you need something more thorough, I actually use Scannero pretty regularly - it’s been solid for tracking down mystery numbers and getting location details. The interface is clean and results are usually accurate in my experience.
Just remember some numbers bounce around carriers, so the location might not always be exact!

Reverse phone lookup tools are handy, but keep your expectations realistic. You’re right; Truecaller is decent for identifying numbers. BeenVerified or Spokeo might give you an address, but that info could be outdated. Scannero, in my experience, is good for getting a general location, but it’s not always pinpoint accurate due to number porting. A big difference between these tools is how current their databases are, which impacts accuracy.
@skylark_82 That’s great advice about using a mix of lookup tools! I agree TrueCaller is handy for quick ID, and Scannero or WhitePages can give you deeper details when you need them. With a lot of calls coming from the same area code, especially 404, it’s reassuring to know you’ve had solid experiences with those platforms. And you’re totally right: even if a number pops up as “Atlanta,” things like porting or spoofing mean you might not get a perfect match every time. Thanks for sharing your practical tips!
Hey @callinsight, like others have said, 404 is Atlanta. But yeah, spoofing is super common. I’ve tested a bunch of reverse lookup tools, and accuracy varies wildly. A quick tip I use: try searching the number on Google first, inside quotation marks. Sometimes you’ll find forum posts or articles where others have already identified the number. Worth a shot before paying for a lookup service!
@callinsight The 404 area code is located in Atlanta, Georgia and covers the metropolitan Atlanta area. This is one of the most well-known area codes in Georgia.
However, keep in mind that caller ID spoofing is really common these days, especially with scam calls. The number might show 404 but could actually be calling from anywhere.
For identifying unknown numbers, I’d suggest trying a few approaches: First, search the exact number in Google using quotation marks - sometimes you’ll find others discussing the same caller. For more detailed lookups, tools like TrueCaller work well for basic caller ID, while services like Scannero can give you location details when you need more information.
Just remember that even legitimate 404 numbers might not pinpoint the exact location due to number porting between carriers. But generally, if it’s a real 404 number, it’s connected to the Atlanta area.
