I received a call from Thailand and I’m unsure who it is. Any way to identify it?
From what I’ve seen, if you can’t find anything with a simple search, try reverse number lookup sites, but those are hit or miss in my experience, especially outside of North America. Sometimes searching the number on social media platforms turns up results if the number is associated with a public profile. If the number seems suspicious, it might be best not to engage.
I’ve also had some luck using Scannero to get more information.
@neonmatrix Hey! I’ve dealt with this exact situation before when I got random calls from international numbers. Here’s what actually worked for me:
TrueCaller is honestly your best bet - I’ve used it for years and it’s pretty solid for identifying unknown numbers, even international ones. The community database is huge so there’s a good chance someone else flagged that Thailand number already.
For reverse lookup, I’ve tried a bunch of apps but most are hit-or-miss outside the US. WhitePages works sometimes, and I’ve had decent luck with BeenVerified too, though their international coverage isn’t perfect.
Pro tip: try googling the exact number with quotes around it - you’d be surprised how often scam numbers pop up in forum discussions or complaint sites. That’s actually how I figured out a sketchy call from Malaysia last month!
@Alex27 Thanks for mentioning Scannero! It’s a solid tool for scooping up more info on tricky numbers, especially internationally. TrueCaller also deserves a shout-out as Skylark_82 said—its large user base helps with global coverage. Reverse lookup sites can be unreliable outside North America, so combining these with social media and exact-quote Google searches definitely raises your odds. For those dealing with unknown or international calls, I’d say start with TrueCaller or Scannero for quick ID, then double-check with community forums or social media. This layered approach usually nets better results than relying on a single source.
@neonmatrix I’ve been in this exact situation with mystery international calls! Here’s my go-to approach that’s worked well:
TrueCaller is your best starting point - go to Settings > Block > Unknown & spam protection and enable caller ID. The community database is massive, so Thailand numbers often show up there already.
For Android, I also recommend trying Should I Answer? app. It has decent international coverage and shows crowd-sourced reviews of suspicious numbers.
My backup method: Google the exact number in quotes like “+66123456789” - you’d be surprised how often scam numbers appear in complaint forums.
Scannero (mentioned above) can provide additional location details if you need more context about where the call originated from.
Start with TrueCaller since it’s free and covers most cases. If nothing comes up and the calls continue, that’s usually a red flag for spam/scam calls from overseas.
Hey @neonmatrix, dealing with mystery calls is annoying! Like others mentioned, TrueCaller is a solid first step. I’ve also had some luck just Googling the number directly (put it in quotes). You’d be surprised how often that surfaces forum posts where others have flagged the same number. Pro tip for TrueCaller: dive into the settings and tweak the spam protection levels, it will save you a ton of time. Good luck!
@PixelNom Yeah, Googling the number with quotes can be surprisingly effective. Sometimes you’ll find forum posts or reports where others have already identified it as spam or a scam. Truecaller is a good first step, but don’t expect it to work every time, especially with newer or less reported numbers. It’s like comparing a general directory to a crowdsourced one; both have their uses, but neither is perfect.
@hexsignal That’s a great step-by-step for dealing with unknown international calls! TrueCaller really does work well for lots of people, and enabling those call blocking and spam protection settings is a huge help—you can do this right from your iPhone’s settings as well. Many iPhone users also tap “Silence Unknown Callers” in Settings > Phone, which can cut down on spam or mystery calls ringing through. Combining TrueCaller for ID and the iPhone’s own settings usually gives everyday users the right balance of info and peace of mind.
